Here we are, roughly 80% through Hunger Action Week, and what a week it has been. The amazing food bloggers taking part in this challenge continue to share their tips, recipes and insights and are keeping the conversation alive. So . . . on behalf of United Way of King County, a big THANK YOU!
In reading through today’s posts, I noticed a common thread. Many of the bloggers are being reminded of their own childhood experiences with hunger, whether they were experiencing it firsthand or witnessing a loved one struggling to keep food on the table.
One blogger wrote, “This morning I was on the phone with my sister explaining to her Hunger Action week and decided to take the opportunity to ask her what she remembers as a child about being hungry. You see I grew up in a family of 6 kids. Both parents worked and for a several years we often ate food bank food. Even though our family qualified for food stamps, my dad was too prideful to accept them because back then they looked similar to cash. By using them, everyone in line recognized immediately that you were a food stamp recipient. My parents used food stamps probably a half dozen times before his pride got the best of him.”
Another blogger reflected on her grandmother’s struggle, “Growing up I was told to finish my dinner because their where starving kids in China. But my parents never said at the dinner table “Did you make enough to bring grandma lunch tomorrow?” When my grandma was broke she’d make an announcement. “I’m going on a diet.” And when grandma was on a diet she only ate one thing: Fudgesicles. Her logic was that if she could only eat one thing it was going to be her favorite food.”
It is alarming that in our country of relative plenty, so many people either struggle with hunger currently or have struggled with it in the past. While the current economic situation has certainly increased the number of people living on the edge, hunger is by no means a new phenomenon in this country. With 1 in 10 Americans receiving food assistance, and many more who qualify for assistance but aren’t receiving any, something needs to change.
